The first tea plants in Sri Lanka were brought from India in the 1840s and 50s by Scotsman James Taylor. When coffee blight wiped out the Sri Lankan coffee industry in the 1870s, coffee planters and men like Sir Thomas Lipton began buying up old coffee farms to plant tea instead.
The warm, tropical climate of Sri Lanka means tea production happens year-round. These teas are known for their rich, red color, smooth, full body, and spicy, tangy flavors.
